Clamping rings

BERGER develops tests and manufactures clamping rings for plastic, metal, stainless steel and fibre barrels in close cooperation with its customers. Since 1950, the supplier of the packaging industry has been manufacturing 4,000 different clamping rings. The great advantage of clamping rings lies in their ease-of-use: They can be opened with just one hand. Clamping rings differ in size, material and profile, as well as whether they come with or without an overlap, and through their various fasteners.

Production is performed under strictest tolerances using special machines. These include the fully automated 2-mm production line for heavy-duty clamping rings and other fully automated systems for smaller clamping ring diameters.

Properties and business activities

Size

BERGER manufactures clamping rings with a diameter of 80 to 2000 mm (standard diameters are between 100 to 800 mm). In addition, special customer requirements can be realized by arrangement.

In general, clamping rings that do not correspond to the above-mentioned specifications can be produced upon request; because customer satisfaction is BERGER’s highest priority.

Materials

BERGER manufactures clamping rings with a material thickness of 0.5 to 2.0 mm in steel and stainless steel. The clamping ring surface is also galvanized (electrolytic or hot-dip galvanized) as standard. Alternatively, the surface can also be powder coated, galvanized or, if stainless steel, electropolished. This results in increased protection of the surface against corrosion or optically improving the surface. (The clamping rings can also be optionally lacquered for the US market – details available only on English website!) BERGER supports its customers with detailed technical advice.

Profile

The clamping rings can be individually adapted to match a diverse array of objects using 800 different profile shapes. The profiles differ in different shapes (V shapes, trapezoidal shape), with and without collar and other special features. BERGER’s almost 70 years of experience enable the company to develop and standardize different profile forms together with the customer. On the basis of the correct profile, UN approval can be acquired in cooperation with the customer. The profile shape is an important component of the safety and tightness of the barrel.

Fasteners / fastener levers

To be able to offer a comprehensive portfolio of different clamping rings, BERGER also supplies a wide range of fasteners, including quick-opening outer lever fasteners, internal lever fasteners, tension levers, clamps, eyelets with nuts and bolts, fasteners with locking tabs and screw fasteners.

Overlap & handling

Clamping rings can also be divided between clamping rings without an overlap and those with short or long overlaps. An overlap ensures forced closure of the two ring ends that can withstand even the most severe stresses. This has great advantages, particularly in the case of verifications and tests under UN approval. A long overlap has been specially developed for optimal handling and automatic sealing. This causes the clamping ring to remain in the overlap, even when fully open.

In order to achieve safe “handling”, the ring ends are defused and the edges of the clamping rings are deburred. This is achieved by specially developed deburring systems, which are used throughout all of BERGER’s production. A further component for the handling safety is the correct selection of the fastener to be used.
